“Give both parents equal rights and responsibilities towards their children.” is the title of e-petition 993 to the Ministry of Justice at the UK Government, which has attracted over 200 signatures so far.
Electronic petitions which attract over 100,000 signatures will have to be debated in the House of Commons.
Even if they don’t reach that threshold, those reaching into the thousands will help focus attention on particular issues.
Success with this petition will not make any direct difference in Scotland, but it is important to shift public opinion across the UK.
FNF Scotland is considering how best to raise the issue of shared parenting in the Scottish Parliament, and anyone keen to contribute to discussion should contact the Edinburgh office (0131 557 2440 or scotland@fnf.org.uk).
